Executive Comittee Meeting 03/23/2005

We held an Executive Committee meeting on March 23rd. Deborah Shapiro wrote up these minutes for the meeting.

We discussed past events - including Spamalot, the Demonstration tennis, and the Book Club.

We also discussed the Boatrace and other upcoming events.

We discussed the responses to the President's "Future of Oxford Email.

Lastly, we discussed soliciting nominations for new officers.

Minutes of Executive Committee meeting, March 23, 2005

Present: Guy Spier, Michael Boyd, Rob McWilliams, Erin Burns, Joseph Lau, Daniel Schlein, Deborah Shapiro

1. Recap of Past Events

(a) Spamalot (Burns)- successful event; approximately 60 attendees.

(b) Future of Oxford talk (Schlein)- 10-12 attendees; Master of St. Peters discussed proposals put forth by the University.

(c) Real Tennis (Spier)- approximately 20 attendees, many of whom were guests. Deficit in cost of event covered by Spier.

(d) Book Club (Spier)- 4 attendees at first meeting; 2 attendees at second meeting.

(e) Young Alumni Events (Spier)- discussion re. finding support for Aniogi so that she can delegate a portion of the work involved in planning Young Alumni events.

2. Website Updates (Spier)
Two blogs have been created. Spier discussed having someone write up each event to post on the past events blog. Spier also discussed �Future of Oxford� and jobs and mentoring blogs. Spier discussed posting the Association�s bylaws and minutes of Executive Committee meetings on the website.

3. �Future of Oxford� Responses (Spier)
Spier reviewed a sample of the responses received. Spier will compile the responses and post them on the blog without attribution. Discussion re. role and value of alumni and alumni groups.

4. Oxford Cambridge Boat Race and Dinner (Spier)
15-17 people have volunteered to row for Oxford. Efforts are now being made to secure 2-3 boats. T-shirts with the Financial Times logo will be sold. Any funds raised in excess of what is needed to cover expenses will be donated to the winning university. Pullinger has been working with John Tepper Marlin to organize the boat race dinner, which will be held at the Harvard Club.

5. Other Upcoming Events

(a) CT Chapter: Bob Spitz talk (McWilliams)- McWilliams discussed efforts to reach more alumni for this event

(b) Christ Church/New College choirs- the Association is promoting this event. The planning is being done by the colleges.

(c) Trinity term: Burns is working on a theatre outing in June; McWilliams has secured William Block to speak to the CT Chapter in June.

6. Other Events (Spier)
Discussion re. writing letters to potential speakers, maintaining ties with other alumni clubs.

7. Trinity Newsletter (Spier)
Spier seeks contributions from members for the newsletter. Discussion re. mailing list and reducing mailing costs by sending copies to Nancy Kenny to distribute within the University and to the colleges.

8. Financial Report (Lau)
Net account balance is approximately $5915, which includes payments received for the boat race dinner.

9. Officers (Spier)
Spier discussed soliciting recommendations for nominations for new officers.

10. Next Meeting
Date to be determined.

Great idea - I couldn't agree more with the glasnost approach to alumni affairs. It's my hope that our articles of incorporation can serve as a model for other groups, including other Oxford alumni associations. We provided them to Kathy Lord at Cambridge to assist her in setting up new alumni groups around the country, so there's never been anything secret about them.
