Dear member,

The following are some of the business and social networking opportunites that we are working on for you:

1. LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a business networking website set up by Reid Hoffman, an Oxford graduate. On the site, the Oxford Alumni Association has its own group - which allows our members to learn about and to contact each other online.

As an exception especially for Oxford Alumni this service is provided to us for free. (Because we are a high quality group of the sort that LinkedIn wants to attract.)

To sign up for LinkedIn, click on the following link:
https://www.linkedin.com/register

2. Tribe.net

Tribe.net is a social networking website which enables its members to read about each other's interests, participate in online conversations, and post opportunities for other members ranging from real estate to jobs to things for sale.

At Tribe.net, we have created a persona for the Secretary of the club which you can see here:

http://people.tribe.net/secretary-oaany?_click_path=Application%5Btribe%5D.Person%5Ba0067ba0-02d5-48a3-8b64-600389b1bf0d%5D&r=10352

We have also created a tribe called Oxford Alumni Association of New York. Click on this link to see it:
http://oaany.tribe.net/?_click_path=Application%5Btribe%5D.Tribe%5B29196645-54c8-401f-bbd3-dcb0218d9025%5D&r=10352

If you like the tribe community, please also link up with the secretary, and join the Oxford Alumni tribe.

3. Flickr.com

Flickr is a service that allows its members to share pictures.

Our Oxford Alumni Association pool allows our members to easily post pictures that are relevant to our members, and to evan have those pictures appear on our website.

Joining Flickr is free. Once you are a member, you can join the Oxford Alumni Association pool and post your own Oxford photographs for our members.

To go to flickr, click here:
www.flickr.com

To see the OAANY pool, click here:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/oxalumny/pool/

You should know two important things about these efforts:

Firstly, all of the services we describe below are opt-in only. In other words, you have to actively join in order to participate. Otherwise, the services described do not know that you exist, thus respecting your privacy.

Secondly, the services are all free to our members.

These efforts are the result of my desire to build our New York Oxford community by providing as many opportunities as possible for us to learn about each other and to interact with each other.

I hope that these services are helpful to you and that you will use them. If you have any feedback, questions of other comments, please feel free to email me at: president@oxalumny.org

or to leave a comment on this blog.

Sincerely,

Guy Spier
President, OAANY

1.	Financial Report (Lau)

f. Young Alumni- turnout at the last event was approximately 55 people. Aniogi discussed organizing a Thanksgiving dinner, smaller get togethers (e.g., groups of 4-5 people gathering at a coffee shop), and finding a way to identify members at large events (e.g., wearing bracelets).

Spier met with John Tepper Marlin regarding the dinner. Spier and Marlin discussed having the Association get involved with the organization of the event.
WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to the web site of the Oxford Alumni Association of New York (OAANY). The OAANY was founded a decade ago as a forum for alumni and friends of the University of Oxford who reside in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The OAANY's goals are:

(a)

To support Oxford University in this area, to enhance its profile and to promote its interests.

(b)

To facilitate contact among Oxford
alumni and friends by organizing a wide variety of events and promoting our
common interests.

The membership of the OAANY
is primarily comprised of people who have matriculated as members of the University
of Oxford, but we also welcome individuals who have a serious interest in the
affairs of the University and in furthering its ideals.

From September through June
each year the Association organizes presentations as part of our Distinguished
Speaker Series and a whole range of social events which we believe will be of
interest to alumni and friends of the University. Given the natural diversity
of our members' backgrounds and occupations, there is no limit to the range of events
held and subjects covered by our speakers - from foreign affairs to business, from
literature to economics and from wine tastings to networking receptions.

We are always on the
lookout for new event ideas and new speakers to address the Association. Very
often our presenters will have an Oxford connection, either being alumni
themselves or being associated in some capacity with the University, but this
is certainly not an absolute requirement.

One of the major benefits
of involvement with the OAANY is the opportunity to meet and mingle with other
alumni and friends of Oxford University. The Oxford alumni in the tri-state area are an amazing group of people,
involved in every conceivable sphere of activity at every possible level. Oxford alumni in this area include the
predictable range of lawyers, investment bankers, management consultants,
professors and graduate students. However,
they also include entrepreneurs, models, doctors, priests, UN executives, volunteers,
those involved in the non-profit world and a wide range of alumni working in
the Arts, publishing and the media. It
is a truly diverse group, yet we have all shared the amazing Oxford
experience. One of the OAANY's major
goals is to enable Oxford alumni to interact with one another - to mix, mingle,
and network in as wide a variety of settings as possible. We hope you will take advantage of these
opportunities to expand your personal and professional networks with other
Oxford alumni.

From time to time the OAANY
organizes joint events with selected other organizations. These events allow Oxford alumni to interact
with others who share similar interests or who have had similar
experiences. The British Universities
and Business Schools Alumni Networking Receptions are good examples of this
type of event. We have also held joint
events with Cambridge in America, the New York LSE alumni group, the
English-Speaking Union, the Harvard Club, the Yale Club, the Williams Club,
Columbia University, New York University, Wharton Business School and a number
of other US and UK alumni groups.

If you would like to become
more involved in the OAANY, I encourage you to consider joining the OAANY's
Executive Committee. This group meets
about once a month to plan events and formulate strategy for the organization. Joining the Executive Committee provides
leadership and networking opportunities, as well as the far more important
opportunity to have fun with fellow alumni! Involvement with the OAANY also allows you to do something that benefits
Oxford and other alumni. There are many
ways in which alumni assist the OAANY, including suggesting a speaker, helping
to plan an event, providing space for an event, liaising with the OAANY's
Advisory Board and so on. Please e-mail
us at info@oxalumny.org if you would like to join us for our next Executive
Committee meeting.

Please take a few moments
to browse through our site and then feel free to contact me at info@oxalumny.org with questions or
suggestions. This is your alumni organization and we want to ensure that it is
responsive to your needs and ideas. I
look forward to meeting with as many alumni as possible in the coming season
and hope that we can enjoy the camaraderie that comes from our shared
experiences at Oxford, be they last year or 60 years ago!

Present: Amanda Pullinger, Erin Burns, Helen Lawson, Dan Schlein, Diana Glassman, Joseph Lau, Deborah Shapiro

1.	New Board of Oxford Alumni Association Inc. and New Executive Committee (Pullinger)

Pullinger reviewed the names of the new Board of Directors and Executive Committee. At the last Board meeting, bylaws were changed such that all Board members must be Oxford matriculants and at least 50% of the members of the Executive Committee must be Oxford matriculants.

2.	501(c)(3) Update (Pullinger)

The Association has been approved as a 501(c)(3) organization. Documentation will be sent this week to several states to obtain corresponding state approvals. Once state approvals are received, members’ dues will be tax deductible and the Association may begin soliciting contributions. Potential sources of contributions are corporate matching programs as well as programs where corporations make donations to a not-for-profit group to which an employee donates a significant amount of time.

The Association will need an accountant to advise on filings. Pullinger discussed ideas for rewarding Cravath, Swaine & Moore for its pro bono service.

3.	Online Forum (Pullinger)

Executive Committee members were instructed to register online to stay updated.

4.	Event Planning (Pullinger, Erin, Diana, Helen)

Upcoming events were reviewed (e.g., June 28 MBA event, July 14 Bastille Day event, and November 4 networking event hosted by NYBSC; Thomas Pink event with Cambridge; Dec. 16 event with OUP, featuring Martin Kemp). Rupa Aniogi has been organizing weekly Young Alumni events.

Discussion was had concerning a Freshers’ Party to be held in the fall. The colleges will not release Freshers’ names, but will include a flier about the event in the Freshers’ packet.

Discussion was had about inviting another speaker, possibly Roy Foster, to join a talk by the Irish Ambassador to the UN, which NYU’s Irish House is interested in hosting.

It was agreed that the annual Holiday Party should be casual rather than formal.

Ideas were discussed about hosting possible fall events, such as a business speaker, wine tasting, environmental speaker, and a political panel.

5.	Newsletter (Pullinger)

The newsletter will be re-designed and enlarged.

6.	Mentoring Program (Pullinger)

The Association is exploring becoming involved in a mentorship program with Interboro College, whose students are underprivileged adults in need of role models.

7.	Financial Report (Lau)

Net checking account balance is approximately $4500.

8.	Fundraising Committee (Pullinger)

Pullinger discussed the possibility of establishing a Fundraising Committee to focus on raising money for Oxford organizations, such as the Ashmolean and the Bodleian.
