I am looking for job opportunities as a computer programmer in the NY/NJ area.

I have a Masters Degree in Physics from Oxford University (Pembroke) and a PhD in Astrophysics from Liverpool John Moores University. I also have nearly 4 years of experience working for a large IT Consultancy firm (LogicaCMG), where I experienced all areas of the software development cycle, including developing and maintaining code in C++, VB and PLSQL.

I am currently working as the Venus Express Software Operations Support at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, part of the University College of London, where I develop and maintain code, primarily in IDL. I am also undertaking courses in MS Access, Dreamweaver and Pearl.

I am an enthusiastic and hard worker - good at working to tight deadlines. I have experience of working both within a team and also independently. I have worked in several different areas and with many different technologies and have found that I can pick up new skills and programming languages quickly.

I am a UK citizen, but I am looking for opportunities in the NY/NJ area for personal reasons.

I would require sponsorship for a work visa.

I am currently looking for opportunities to relocate to North America – preferably in the New York area.

For the past six years I have been conducting empirical research in international economics and finance. This occupation has equipped me with extensive experience regarding quantitative research methods and the theoretical background concerning international economics, finance, growth, and economic development.

In my current occupation as a Visiting Professor in economics I design and deliver lectures on international economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics, and economic development for a variety of students, often with a non-economic background. This makes it necessary to communicate complicated economic issues intelligible to a general audience. Given my extensive teaching experience, I was able to demonstrate this ability on various occasions in recent years.

In addition to my academic activities, I frequently apply my economic insight to relevant policy issues. In this context, I have recently taken up a consultancy with the German development organization GTZ. In this capacity I compile and author economic analyses regarding the impact of international trade and finance on the poor based on GTZs field expertise.

As a development consultant based in Mumbai, India, I gained first-hand development experience both during my daily encounters with the poor themselves and through my work with a number of local NGOs.

M is for Monarch. M is for Manipulation. M is for Murder. M is for Macbeth.

Behind every great man, there is a great woman. Mir Productions' daring new adaptation, "The M Game" explores the idea of five women behind Macbeth. Shakespeare's most complicated and commanding female role, Lady Macbeth is imagined in this production as five different women who each represent different aspects of the character's personality. All appearing on the stage simultaneously, the ladies portray the complexity of the woman Macbeth calls his "dearest partner of greatness."

The production is especially timely given the country's current political climate. With an increasingly unpopular war, countless lives lost and billions of dollars spent, everyone is looking for a scapegoat, someone to blame. But who is responsible? Playing with text, plot and characters, using sound and movement, the production will examine self-determination and manipulation versus fate and predetermination as it relates to Macbeth's rapid rise to power and his subsequently rapid fall. Using the characters of Lady Macbeth and the witches in an untraditional manner, The 'M' Game forces audiences to rethink their notions of responsibility as it relates to Macbeth, the state of the nation, and even their own actions.

The 'M' Game launches Mir Productions' exciting second season, which will include new work by artists Joyce Wu, Adrienne Dawes, and Genevieve Gearhart. Artistic Director Erinina Marie Ness formed Mir Productions in August 2006 and it is already a fast-growing, diversely talented young group of artists committed to creating theater that crosses and breaks down cultural and language boundaries by supporting new work and exploring interdisciplinary art forms. Mir Productions is particularly interested in integrating movement with text and theater, but they are also interested in exploring the design elements of sound, visual art and film. Mir Productions is open to developing new works in this manner, as well as freshly examining traditional works from an interdisciplinary or multicultural perspective.

I've just found a great two bedroom apartment in a Park Slope brownstone (right near the 2/3 and the B/Q), and am looking for a roommate. The room is big, sunny, and quiet (it faces backyards). It has parquet floors, a closet, and a mantelpiece. The rest of the apartment consists of a large living/dining room, a rather small galley kitchen, a modern bathroom, and two small rooms (for me). The landing is all ours (for shoes, umbrellas, & whatnot). There are only two other apartments in the brownstone, and the entrance is lovely — very Victorian, all wallpaper and wood panelling. move in date: as soon as possible.

I'm a teacher/tutor (female, 31), out from the late morning/early afternoon through the evening most days in the week. I'm friendly and easy-going. In my free time I read, write, and hang out with friends. Looking for a friendly, responsible, fairly quiet person who doesn't smoke or watch a ton of television.

Here's the property listing for pictures: http://www.corcoran.com/property/listing.aspx?Region=NYC&ListingID=951451 (If the link stops working, I can e-mail you pictures.) The room in question is the one in pictures 8 and 9. It has a separate entrance. The neighborhood is wonderful — great restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, the park a couple of blocks away, subway lines galore.

Hello Mr. Spier,

Just wanted to send along regards to you and your family, and to let you know how Cassie is doing at St. Hilda's, Oxford.

We will always be grateful for the support that you and Amanda extended to us as we tried to find a way to fund her education. We will never forget your kindness!

She is now in her second year and will graduate in June of next year. She is very happy with her biology studies and it seems that the professors are happy with her. Most recently, one professor was shaking his head "Yes" so rapidly to an answer she had given that his glasses fell off.

She has had the honor of having Prince Charles walk through a lab were she was working, saw the Queen drive by with her entourage, and last week was seated in the audience while watching the filming of the game
show "Mastermind". A British friend was on the show and invited her to come along. Also, she now belongs to the Oxford University Light Entertainment Society (OULES) and is working on her second production.
She has had some wonderful experiences to go along with a wonderful education!

She sent these pictures of the big snow that arrived in Oxford last night. I thought you might enjoy them.

If it is all right with you, we'll continue to keep you posted on her time at Oxford and to always send along Best Wishes to you and the OAANY.

Very best regards,

During August the Oxford Univerisity Greenland Expedition explored and climbed in an area to the north of the Watkins Mountains in East Greenland. Brasenose undergraduates, Hauke Engel and Ben Spencer, and Chris Abbott from St. Hugh’s College, made twelve first ascents of unclimbed peaks, and travelled 90km through largely unexplored terrain.

Flying in from Iceland by Twin Otter at the beginning of August, we established a base-camp on the vast Gronland Styrelsens Gletscher, at the northern edge of the Gronau Nunatakker. Martin Lindsay’s British Trans-Greenland Expedition passed through this region in 1934, but the area has seen very few expeditions since. The first climb of the expedition was also one of our finest achievements - a 28-hour ascent of a peak we named Mount Currahee (2613m), which involved steep ice, an interesting bergschrund, and an unplanned bivvy just below the summit! A somewhat extreme introduction to the Arctic!

After a day of recuperation and equipment maintenance we set off the following night, hauling our pulks up and onto the Greenland icecap. Crevasse fields provided for interesting breaks during rather monotonous pulk-hauling, but were navigated without incident. Over the next three weeks we travelled 90km across the southern edge of the Knud Rasmussen Land icecap, frequently venturing into the mountains that form its border. The good snow and ice made for fantastic Alpine-style climbing (as long as the unstable rock was avoided!), and we put up routes ranging in difficulty from easy ski ascents to steep multi-pitch ice climbs. Our most notable ascents were established in an unexplored range we named the Oxford Nunatakker, just to the west of the huge Christian IV glacier. We climbed six of the seven peaks in this group, including a pyramid-shaped mountain we named Mount Brasenose.

After crossing the 12km-wide Christian IV glacier, we were kept in the tent for a day due to zero visibility. We were rather bemused to see the thermometer reach +5 degrees celsius during our confinement. With down sleeping bags rated to -25 degrees, we were in serious danger of over-heating! Finally the clouds cleared, an ascent of a nearby peak gave us a good look-out on the route ahead, and again we dragged our sledges up onto the icecap. After three more days of travelling, a peak and a speedy descent off the icecap thrown in for variety, we reached our pick-up area. Snowfall kept us in the tent for two days, and when the sun was out again we achieved another ascent with some pretty tricky route-finding, and then negotiated the last crevasse-field to reach our pick-up point. The last few days of the expedition saw the thermometer plummet to around -20 degrees, with some heavy wind taking the effective temperature down further. An attempt on a prominent nearby mountain had to be aborted less than 100m from the summit due to biting cold and extremely strong winds.

On 28th August the wind died down and the sun shone brightly for the first time for a few days - perfect conditions for the Twin Otter landing. After 13 months of planning, preparation, training, and above-all, fundraising, we were in agreement that the expedition had been everything we had dreamt of and more. We are extremely grateful to the Oxford University Society for their generous grant, which enabled such a successful expedition to come into existence, and has spawned many plans for the future!

ATTENTION NEWS AND AUTOMOTIVE EDITORS
ACP puts on extreme show at X Games
LOS ANGELES, CA (August 7, 2006) – Canadian rally driver Andrew “ACP” Comrie-Picard and his grassroots team showed the world just how extreme car racing can be at the first ever X Games rally this past week in Los Angeles.
The driver set competitive times on the rally’s individual stages, including the “big air” Super Special Stage in the Home Depot Center in urban Los Angeles. But a misstep in the mountainous desert terrain north of Los Angeles put the team out of medal contention.
“It was a classic rally ‘off,’” said Comrie-Picard. “We were sliding around a banked corner when the tail dug in and the front of the car popped over the edge.”
The team ended up with their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV stuck in a gully some 150-feet (50 metres) below the road, on a flat tire. At first it looked bleak, but there was a definite upside to the situation in a competition where big drama is the main attraction for fans.
“Trust Andrew to slide off the road when a media helicopter was overhead and another camera from a mountaintop was trained on us” said co-driver, Marc Goldfarb. “Certainly we can’t tell any fibs about what happened!”
The “off” got heavy coverage on the X Games rally broadcast on ESPN and ABC networks, and an on-camera interview of Comrie-Picard focused on the never-quit attitude that makes rally car racing such a compelling sport.
The team changed the tire and found a place to rejoin the road by jumping a bank about one quarter of a mile back on the road.
“You do what you have to,” said Comrie-Picard, “and you never, never quit.”
The team had been pegged as medal contenders at the X Games after a terrific performance the previous weekend at the Maine Forest Rally, where they qualified to enter the Los Angeles contest. Comrie-Picard had set stage times faster than Travis Pastrana, the eventual winner of the X Games rally over World Rally Championship legend Colin McRae.
“Andrew was on fire at Maine,” said crew chief Francois Veillieux, “but we showed up at the X Games a week later with the same car and the same setup only to find that the competition had upped their game considerably.”
Only 12 drivers were invited to compete at the inaugural X Games rally. Comrie-Picard finished between Hollywood stunt drivers Rhys Millen and Tanner Foust, the pair who drove the cars in the films The Dukes of Hazzard and The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift. On the final Super Special, the three set the track on fire and had the audience on the edge of their seats as they drifted their cars in front of the TV cameras that framed the X Games broadcast to 190 million viewers -- over a million of them for the live rally portion.
“This is such a fantastic opportunity for rally racing and for the teams competing in the championship,” said Comrie-Picard. “And for us, it’s a great chance to be on the leading edge as this growing sport gains new fans in North America.”
Comrie-Picard’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV was prepared with the generous assistance of the Losier family at Boisvert Mitsubishi in Blainville, Que. He was co-driven by Marc Goldfarb.
British-Columbia-based board game maker Headz Gamez International is a key supporter of this grassroots Canadian team in their X Games effort. Comrie-Picard has been proud to display the "Griddly Headz" brand on his competition car for this event.
Special thanks also to Slowboy Racing, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada, Yokohama Canada, Sherwin-Williams and Vibrant Performance for joining ACP and his crew at the last minute to help get them to the X Games.
The team is now planning its next steps, and Comrie-Picard says he’s optimistic about a new partnership that will see them take on the rest of the season.
For an insider’s look about the team’s X Games experience, visit www.flatovercrest.com and click on the link to “ACP’s X Games journal.” ACP accepted an invitation by the site’s editors to document his experience on the popular rally webzine and thousands of fans clicked through all week to follow the story.
---
ABOUT THE DRIVER: The Edmonton-born Andrew Comrie-Picard is running a season of selected events in the United States and Canada in 2006. The privateer won the U.S. season-opener in February, over the factory-supported Subaru Rally Team USA.
When he isn’t racing, Comrie-Picard is the co-host of the 2006 Canadian Rally Championship broadcast, airing nationwide this fall on the Chum network. He is also the host of the Global TV show War of the Wheels, airing now on Prime.
The Alberta-born, British Columbia-raised Comrie-Picard now lives in Toronto.
ABOUT RALLY CAR RACING: Rally car racing is considered the extreme sport of automobile racing and is often described simply as “real cars, real roads, real fast.”
This all-season motorsport sees drivers and their co-drivers take modified road cars to the limit as they achieve blistering speeds over courses that cover more than 100 kilometres of gravel, dirt or snow-covered roads.

Bids for lunch with Warren Buffett were holding at $502,400 yesterday morning. But the under-bidder tells Observer he still has some dry powder.

Mohnish Pabrai runs a $300m value investing fund in California. "If there weren't a Warren Buffett, there wouldn't be a Pabrai Investment Funds," he says. "There's a big tuition bill due and there's no way to repay that properly."

The proceeds will go to the Glide Foundation, a San Francisco charity for the poor and homeless praised by Buffett for its effectiveness. This year's bids have already put last year's $351,100 in the shade. Pabrai thinks Buffett's pledge this week to give away almost $40bn may have increased interest, and he expects a flurry of bids as today's deadline approaches.

He declined to share his strategy or limit with Observer. If he ends up winning the lunch Pabrai, 42, plans to take his wife and two daughters, aged nine and 10, with him.

He is bidding with New York-based fund manager Guy Spier, another disciple of the Oracle of Omaha. Spier, 40, who is president of the Oxford Alumni Association of New York, also plans to bring his wife along for what, by the reported accounts of previous winners, is a convivial occasion.

Mylo's Dr. Pressure reached no. 3 in the UK charts. Mylo is the closest i've ever been to a polymath (a form of genius), son of Cambridge academics, superb guitar player, Oxford University prize winner for his essays on analytic philosophy, marketing genius, you name it. He composed the album during his free time on his Mac importing guitar riffs and solos and remixes. He did it for fun, spending 2000 pounds on the project.
