Hilary Term 2002

President's Letter

Dear Fellow Oxonian,

The past few months have brought a great deal of change for the Oxford Alumni Association of New York. After a period of several years during which the OAANY operated independently of the Oxford University Society, the Association decided that closer relations would enhance its ability to serve the needs of its members. To meet that goal, the OAANY has rejoined with the Society, which supports alumni chapters in cities around the world. As the official New York branch of the Society, the OAANY is the group formally approved by the University to repre-sent the interests of all its alumni in the tri-state area. Our partnership with the University will assist us in providing a wide range of events and benefits for our members. The stimulating calendar for 2002 already includes an address by Professor Tim Jenkinson of the Said Business School, a wine tasting and dinner, and a pub gathering featuring live coverage of the Oxford-Cambridge boat race. Be sure to visit OAANY at the University’s North American Reunion in March at the Waldorf-Astoria, where we will host an International Wine Festival in conjunction with Morrell & Company, which is sure to be very popular. Members will see further collaboration between OAANY and other select groups enabling them to attend additional events and obtain significant discounts on items such as theatre tickets. We are actively developing our speaker program at press time and adding other events to our calendar on a regular basis, so please check our web site at www.oxalumny.org. If you have an idea for an event or belong to an organization which would like to co-sponsor one, we encourage you to contact any officer of the Association. As always, we are keenly interested to hear from volun-teers to assist with varied projects ranging from web site design to organizing activities. On behalf of the OAANY and the Oxford University Society, we are proud to announce our reaffiliation and look forward to an exciting year of activity. If you have not already renewed your membership, we urge you to do so and encourage other alumni to do the same. We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events.

2000 Bordeaux Wine Futures
Nature Opened Its Door to All Wine Lovers – Everywhere
By Peter Morrell Senior Wine Advisor, Chairman – Morrell & Company

Prior to the year 2000, purchasing Bordeaux wine as Futures – before they’d been bottled – was a somewhat mysterious, but exciting money saving prospect, reserved, for the most part, for only serious oenophiles. Yet now, with the debut of the across-the-board-excellent 2000 Bordeaux vintage, Bordeaux Futures buying is open to all who enjoy wine. Here’s why: In all top vintages prior to 2000, the superior qualities of the best vintages were predominantly exemplified by only the great classified growths of Bordeaux. Each time a great vintage occurred, the world’s wine connoisseurs all “chased” the same highly rated pricey classified chateau bottled wines. However, with the debut of the 2000 vintage in Bordeaux, the world’s wine professionals, critics and reviewers – having tasted widely – discovered that the excellent qualities of this extraordinary vintage were evidenced by hundreds of wines from virtually every Bordeaux district including eminently affordable, everyday wines priced as low as $100.00 per case! Thus, the universal quality of the 2000 Bordeaux vintage makes it appealing for wine lovers everywhere – no matter what their level of wine knowledge to acquire affordable wines from this great vintage as money saving Futures. Here’s what Robert Parker said: “The finest 2000s possess the most impressive length, structure, concentration, and delineation that I have experienced in 23 years of tasting new Bordeaux vintages. Additionally, the vintage appears to be remarkably consistent... there are superb wines in all appellations! “The lesson consumers can learn from history is that buy-ing futures of the finest wines always makes economic sense in the great years. And no one should forget that this vintage marks something that comes once every thousand years... a chronological milestone. “This is the finest Bordeaux vintage since 1982 for wines with lesser pedigrees.” All OAANY members will receive a 10% discount at Morrell & Company www.morrellwine.com.
