Michaelmas Term 2001
President's Letter
Dear Fellow Oxonian,
I am honored to have been elected President of the Oxford Alumni Association
of New York for 2001-2002. Derek Benham, our past President, handed over a
dynamic and growing organization and I am looking forward to an active and
interesting year.
At the Annual General Meeting in late June, the OAANY also elected a new
slate of officers and Executive Committee. The names and contact addresses
of the officers of the Association appear on page 3 of this Newsletter. You
may contact any one of them when you have ideas, suggestions or even complaints.
I want to emphasize to you that the Association hopes to serve as many of
you as possible and to broaden its offerings to meet a wide range of interests.
I think you will see many signs of that in the much expanded program of activities
that we have set up for the Michaelmas term. Also, I want to make it clear
that the Executive Committee is interested in welcoming you as observers at
its monthly meetings. Just please give me a call or send me an email to let
me know that you would like to come.
Please note a couple of new ventures that we hope you will like. During the
summer we launched our Email Information Service. This allows members to communicate
with each other about events or activities that are not officially sponsored
by OAANY. Also, we are in the process of forming book clubs, and you can find
further details about these on page 3. Finally, we have considerably increased
the number of events we organize collaboratively with other organizations
in New York. If any of you are members of an organization which would like
to co-sponsor an event, please let either me or our Vice President for Events,
Joe Pascal, know. We are particularly interested in hearing from more recent
graduates with ideas they would like to explore.
Looking forward to seeing you at our next event or hearing from you.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Your Association needs you! The OAANY is looking for volunteers to help with
various activities, including upgrading our web site and assisting at events.
Volunteering can take as little as one hour every few months, and is a great
way to meet fellow alumni in the tri-state area. If you are interested in
finding out more, please contact Helen Lawson at info@oxalumny.org.
NEW EMAIL SERVICE OFFERED
The OAANY is excited to announce its latest communications innovation - our
new Email Information Service. Are you looking for a tennis partner or a roller
blading buddy? Do you have an apartment to sub-let, or a vacancy in your office
to fill? If so, this new email tool is for you. The OAANY's Email Information
Service allows members to communicate with each other about matters that are
relevant to our members, Oxford and the UK, but that are not officially sponsored
OAANY events. To join this email list, or to send an email to those on the
list, please email Mark Killingsworth at secretary@oxalumny.org.
If you would simply like to be reminded about OAANY events, and to receive
information about new events being added to our Michaelmas Calendar, please
subscribe to our Events Email List. You can do this by sending an email to
Helen Lawson info@oxalumny.org, asking
to be added to the Events Email List.
NEW BOOK CLUBS FORMING
The OAANY is excited to announce that we are now helping members to form
Book Clubs. The OAANY will act as a clearinghouse for the Book Clubs, taking
expressions of interest from members and putting them in touch with others
who have similar interests. Members will then be free to make their own arrangements
with other Book Club members as to where and when the Club will meet and what
it will read. Members should also agree whether the Club will meet in members'
apartments, or in a local restaurant. We hope that the Book Clubs not only
will further our members' literary interests, but also will provide them with
the opportunity to get to know other members informally in a small group setting,
in contrast to the large group events that the OAANY often holds. If you are
interested in joining a Book Club, please send an email to Michael
Brookes. The email should include information about the type of book you
would like to read and discuss (if you have a preference), the day and time
of day you prefer (lunch, evenings, weekends), your matriculation year, where
you live, and how best to contact you. Please let us know if you are interested
in a Club meeting in particular parts of the tri-state area, or one formed
with others from similar matriculation years.
