The event, which took place at the popular East Village bar Arlo & Esme, drew a slew of happy revelers in costumes harking back to their school days. The DJ played a mix of kitsch classics and hip hop and the floor was crowded with people dancing like it was... well, we won't reveal what years we were in school, but suffice to say it was less painful the second time around without the braces and bad skin.
OAANY and Cambridge in America hosted the fifth Oxford-Cambridge Alumni Boat Race on Saturday, August 29th at the Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport, Connecticut.
Because of inclement weather, we were able to boat just one mixed eight from each University. The crews competed in two races, and Cambridge emerged victorious both times, cheered on by fans who braved the rain and wind to watch the race.
After the races, alumni, friends and family members gathered for an (indoor) barbecue lunch and lively conversation at the Saugatuck Rowing Club.

Thank you to rowers and spectators alike who came out to the 4th Annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race on Saturday September 13th at the Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport, Connecticut. The weather was excellent for rowing, although the cloud cover varied throughout the day. Cambridge proved to be the stronger group on this day, winning every race. If Saman Majd hadn't broken his oar during the Men's race, it might have been taken by Oxford!

Thanks to all of you who came out to row at the 3rd annual alumni boat race on Sat Sep 8th. Three Cambridge alumni drove down from Boston for the event, one of whom had just stepped off the red-eye from the west coast three hours before the race... truly a heroic effort!
The weather was sunny and hot, but unfortunately the wind created unusually rough water conditions. Despite the rough water, no major crabs were caught, and despite the loss of Oxford's rudder in the 3rd race there were no major clashes. We had two coxswains from Oxford, Kajsa McLaren and Ben Crystal, who neatly handled all four races for both universities in difficult conditions.

On Monday, April 30, 2007, over one hundred Oxford alumni in the New York City area gathered at the University Club for a luncheon with the Chancellor Lord Patten. The Chancellor spoke to a captivated audience about the future of the University and remained after the lunch to answer questions.

On November 15, 100 members of the Oxford Alumni Association of New York (OAANY) were joined by an equal number of Cambridge graduates at a reception and preview screening of The History Boys hosted by Fox Searchlight Pictures and the American Associates of the National Theatre at the IFC Theatre in Greenwich Village. Based on the award-winning play by Alan Bennett and directed by Nicholas Hytner (Trinity Hall, Cambridge and Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor, Oxford), The History Boys follows eight Yorkshire classmates as they prepare to take the Oxbridge entrance exam in 1983. The boys, all of whom are played in the film by the same actors who appeared on stage, find themselves being guided by teachers with very different approaches to education: one towards the end of his career (Richard Griffiths) who uses unorthodox methods to share his passion for learning for its own sake, another senior teacher (Frances de la Tour) who emphasizes mastery of material, and a pragmatic teacher at the beginning of his career (Stephen Campbell Moore) who advocates crafting essays that stand out by being contrarian or controversial.

The Connecticut Chapter of the OAANY had a private tour of an intriguing art exhibition, Sensation and Sensibility: Viewing Gainsborough's Cottage Door, at the Yale Center for British Art. The tour was followed by dinner.

We had another successful OAANY theatre outing to see Sir Alan Ayckbourn's play at 59E59 Theatre. Sixty alumni members participated, and a few photos of the group are below.
The play is well worth seeing. What made it more special was that the entire cast stayed after the play for a very interesting Q&A. We learnt about the transition they had to make to bring the play to New York. They learnt from the audience where the best supermarkets were in New York!
Thanks, as always, to Erin Burns for organizing. Watch out for our next theatre event.

The 72nd Annual Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race Dinner was celebrated in traditional style at the Harvard Club on April 7, 2005.
Speeches on the topic of the Inaugural Oxford-Cambridge NY Alumni Boat race (Jeff Gingold, New York Rowing Association), the real 151st Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race in London (Jim Rogers, Balliol, Oxford) and the Battle of Trafalgar 200th anniversary (Peter Mosse, Brasenose, Oxford; Dr. Jay Winter, Pembroke, Cambridge) were well received by the 80 guests at the Harvard Club.
A Toast to the Universities was given by Dr. Jay Winter and the response was given by Dame Judith Mayhew-Jonas (the first female Provost of King’s, Cambridge.)

The inaugural Oxford-Cambridge New York Alumni Boat Race on Sunday April 3, 2005 was a gathering of over eighty alumni rowers and friends, who rowed, coxed, cheered, and celebrated the spirit embodied in the rivalry that has helped set the standards for excellence in rowing and sportsmanship the world over. The partnerships of two organizations, (NYRA) and the New York Restoration Project (NYRP), have helped accelerate a resurgence of rowing in the New York area, creating an environment that allowed the event to take place.
This boat race marks the beginning of a season of four annual regattas being run by New York Rowing Association (NYRA) making it the first time that the Harlem River in New York City has had a rowing season of both collegiate and club regattas since the 1950’s. NYRA, which began in 1866 as the Harlem Regatta Association, is comprised of 19 organizations that are dedicated to providing programs and events that promote rowing in the New York and the surrounding areas.

What a great show! We had 60 Oxford/Cambridge alumni come out to see "Spamalot" and I've included some photos taken at the theatre.
Many thanks to Erin Burns, our fearless Cultural Events planner at OAANY, who conceived and executed the plan.
It's well worth seeing and has many classic Python moments.
